The Justice, Development and Peace/Caritas (JDPC) Nnewi has unveiled a new initiative — the Anambra Local Government Accountability Fellowship (ALGAF).
Designed to transform governance in Anambra State through accountability, transparency, and citizen participation. The program was officially launched on September 8, 2025, in collaboration with the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (NCSR) and with funding support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
Empowering Citizens Across Anambra: The fellowship welcomed 45 participants drawn from the state’s three senatorial zones. These fellows represent a wide spectrum of society, including youth, women, people with disabilities, and grassroots leaders. Their diversity reflects ALGAF’s vision of inclusive governance that gives all communities a voice in shaping development at the local government level.
Purpose of the Fellowship: According to JDPC Nnewi, ALGAF goes beyond being just another intervention program. It is a strategic effort to redefine the relationship between citizens and local authorities, ensuring that governance is not only done for the people but with the people. Through this fellowship, participants will learn how to effectively engage their local councils, demand transparency, and push for policies that directly address community needs.
Voices from the Launch
Rev. Fr. Benedict Chima Okolo, Director of JDPC Nnewi, emphasized that the fellowship is a deliberate attempt to build a model of governance where accountability, transparency, and inclusiveness are central pillars.
Similarly, Onyekachi Ololo, one of the program leads, described ALGAF as a “social experiment” aimed at demonstrating that governance works best when citizens are active partners in the process. He stressed that transparency in resource allocation and responsiveness to community needs are essential in building trust between leaders and the people.
Communication and Storytelling
A key part of the program is its communication strategy, which focuses on storytelling, visibility, and digital engagement. Fellows are expected to amplify their experiences and outcomes so that the wider public can see the impact of accountable governance in action. During the onboarding session, a lively Q&A showcased the fellows’ enthusiasm and readiness to contribute meaningfully to their local government areas.
Building a Culture of Accountability
With ALGAF, JDPC Nnewi envisions a future where governance in Anambra State is more inclusive, people-centered, and transparent. By equipping citizens with the tools to monitor, engage, and participate in governance processes, the fellowship aims to lay the foundation for sustainable community development and stronger democratic practices at the grassroots.
