This is a Finance for Development (F4D) Project by Oxfam; the Finance for Development is the project aiming to make public finances accountable for the vulnerable groups, the concept of the project understands the need for more inclusive fiscal justice is growing due to the increase of inequality and extreme poverty especially in development countries. These include fair tax system and strategic use of public expenditure.
We partnered with a group known as Tax Justice and Governance Platform in Anambra state, this group is made up of market traders, artisans, religious leaders, PWDs and Community members.
The Goal of the project is to seek for ways to have a transparent and accountable tax system in the state and to arrest the multiple tax system that have posed serious threat to the small and medium scale businesses in the state.
The project had findings and below are the recommendations to the findings.
- That the Government must stop the use of consultants to collect Taxes, stoppage will block leakages associated with the use of consultants for tax collection and shall boost revenue accruing to the State and Local Govt for effective service delivery
- Payment of taxes should be eased through virtual means to encourage citizens to pay through payment cards, or at online payment platforms
- Tax policies should be reshaped in ways that encourage and support growth of the informal sector of the economy
